The tabla was invented in the late 17th century by the same artist that developed the Sitar, Amir Khusroo. The structure and design of the drum was largely influenced by the Mridangam and Pakhawaj. Over the last two centuries, tabla has been the forefront of percussion instruments in North Indian classical music as well as popular music, demonstrating the versatility of this unique instrument.
