Gita Govinda in Odissi

Culture, Dance, indian music, Odissi
The Gita Govinda is an integral part of the Indian classical dance and
music scenes. This is a poetic composition of 12 chapters composed by the Oriyan poet Jayadeva.
Yahi Madhava was the composition I was first introduced to when I
participated in the TFA production, Odissi Odyssey in 1994. Oh my, I was
completely enthralled by the music and choreography of the abhinaya. Pandit
Ragunath Panigrahi’s rendition of this composition is heart-rending. I
was fortunate enough to then watch a live performance of another beautiful
Jayadeva composition, Pasyati Dishi Dishi by the great Guru Kelucharan
Mohapatra when he visited TFA Kuala Lumpur in 1996. Guruji was accompanied beautifully on vocals by Ragunathji. This is a performance that is etched in my memory forever. Remembering this magical time, I was surfing YouTube the other day and came across this rare video of Guruji performing the first part of Yahi Madhava. He is just out-of-this-world!!! The second link provides a nice English translation of the Gita Govinda which is originally in Sanskrit. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
